Your furniture is often the most valuable, and most irreplaceable, part of a move. A dining table that's been in the family for generations, a new sectional, a solid wood dresser: one scrape on a door frame or one bump in the truck can leave damage that's hard to fix.
At Dependable Moving LLC, our movers handle furniture every day for families across Norwell, Hingham, Scituate, Plymouth, and the rest of the South Shore. Here's how to keep every piece in the same condition it left in, whether you hire professionals or do some of the prep yourself.
1. Take inventory and photos before moving day
Walk through your home and list each large piece you're moving. Take clear photos of anything valuable or antique from several angles, including existing scratches or wear. Photos help you remember what goes where and give you a record of each piece's condition before the move.
2. Decide what's worth moving
Moving furniture you don't want costs time and money. Before you pack, decide what stays, what goes and what gets sold or donated. Measuring rooms and doorways at your new home helps too. That oversized armoire might not fit up the stairs of a Cape-style house in Duxbury or a condo in Quincy.
3. Clean and empty every piece
Dust and grit trapped under wrapping can scratch finishes as furniture shifts. Wipe down each piece before it's wrapped. Then empty drawers, cabinets and shelves. Full drawers make furniture heavier, put stress on joints and can slide open in transit.
4. Remove legs, knobs and glass
Removable parts are the most likely to break. Take off table legs, bed rails, mirrors, glass shelves, and decorative hardware when you can. Put screws and small parts in labeled zip-top bags, and tape each bag to the piece it belongs to. For larger items like beds, sectionals and desks, professional movers can take care of this for you. See our post on whether movers can disassemble and reassemble furniture.
5. Wrap everything in the right materials
The right wrapping depends on the piece:
Wood furniture: Wrap in thick moving blankets secured with stretch wrap or tape on the blanket, never directly on the finish. Plastic wrap directly on wood can trap moisture and damage the finish.
Upholstered furniture: Cover sofas and chairs with plastic furniture covers or stretch wrap to protect against dirt, moisture and snags.
Leather: Use blankets or breathable covers rather than tight plastic, which can trap moisture against leather.
Glass and mirrors: Tape an X across the glass to strengthen it, then wrap in padding and pack in a mirror box or between cardboard sheets.
Corners and edges: Add cardboard corner protectors to tables, dressers and frames.
Our packing services use premium materials, and our crew wraps fragile, bulky and valuable pieces with care.
6. Give antiques and heirlooms extra care
Older furniture often has weaker joints, delicate veneer and finishes that react to temperature and humidity. For antiques:
Never lift by the arms, legs or top. Lift from the frame or base.
Remove anything fragile, like glass doors or marble tops, and pack it separately.
Wrap with padding first, then blankets, and avoid tape touching the surface.
Talk to your movers about high-value pieces before moving day so they can plan the right materials and space in the truck.
7. Protect your home, too
Furniture damage often comes with damage to walls, door frames and floors. Clear a wide path from each room to the door, prop doors open and remove rugs that could slip. Ask your movers about floor runners and door-frame protection, especially on hardwood or in tight entryways common in older South Shore homes.
8. Lift and carry the right way
Most furniture damage happens while it's being carried, not while it's in the truck. Lift with your legs, keep pieces level, and never drag furniture across the floor. Use furniture sliders for short moves across a room and a dolly for heavy items. Carry tall pieces like bookcases upright, and tilt them only as much as needed to clear doorways and stairs.
9. Load the truck strategically
How furniture is placed in the truck matters as much as how it's wrapped. Heavy pieces go in first, against the front wall. Dressers and tables stand upright, mattresses and mirrors stand on edge, and everything is strapped to the truck walls so nothing shifts. Never stack heavy boxes on top of wood or upholstered furniture.
10. Store furniture properly if you need time
If your new home isn't ready, don't leave furniture in a garage or damp basement, where moisture and temperature swings can warp wood and cause mildew. Climate-controlled storage services keep furniture safe for a few weeks or several months, and we can deliver it when you're ready.
